Hajj and Umrah involve long walks, large crowds, hot weather and disrupted routines. Good preparation at home makes the journey easier on your body so that you can focus on worship. This is a general guide, not medical advice. Please consult your doctor about your own health before you travel.

Vaccinations and health certificates

Travel to Saudi Arabia requires certain vaccinations, including meningitis, and you should carry your certificate. Requirements can change from year to year, so ask your operator to confirm the current list before you visit a clinic. Keep the original certificate in your hand baggage along with a copy.

Build your walking stamina early

Tawaf, Sa'i and the movements between Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah involve a lot of walking. Start a light daily walking routine at least a few months before departure and increase it gradually. Wear the same sandals or shoes you plan to use so that your feet are used to them.

Stay hydrated and protect yourself from heat

Drink water regularly, even when you do not feel thirsty. Carry a refillable bottle, use an umbrella during the day and rest in the shade between rituals. If you feel dizzy, unusually tired or unwell, tell your group leader without delay.

Medicines and personal items

Carry regular prescriptions in hand baggage with a doctor's note or prescription copy, plus a small kit with basic items such as pain relief, rehydration salts and plasters. Keep medicines in their original packaging. Pilgrims with chronic conditions should speak to their doctor about managing medicines during travel and prayer schedules.

Hygiene in crowded places

Wash your hands often, carry unscented hygiene supplies because perfumed products are not allowed in Ihram, and avoid sharing personal items. Wearing a mask in dense crowds is a personal choice many pilgrims make.
